The Strange Tale of IGE and Affinity Media

Recently uncovered court documents (PDF) have revealed a potentially damning piece of information with regards to Affinity Media:

Defendant, IGE U.S., LLC n/k/a Affinity Media Holdings, LLC, (“IGE US”)

“N/k/a” is a legal term meaning “now known as.” In other words, according to United States law, IGE and Affinity Media are one in the same.

IGE, as you may recall, set up Affinity Media as a holding company for the many MMO news and information sites they began acquiring several years ago, including Zam, Thottbot, and, most recently, WoWHead.

The reason this admission is damning is not that no one knew that IGE and Affinity were once one in the same, but that they remain one in the same.

This, coming after months of everyone from company President John Maffei on down to the owners of WoWHead steadfastly maintaining that all ties between IGE and Affinity had been cut, Affinity had renounced the RMT business, and that they now disagreed with it on an ethical basis.

Maffei has recently even gone so far as to issue a public statement that, “We sold IGE. We are clearly separating our business from those practices.”

Either Maffei is lying, or the US federal court system is.

We have contacted Affinity Media seeking their official response on the issue. As of publishing time, we have received no comments. If that changes, we will keep you updated accordingly.
