Austin GDC: Interview with John Romero

Guest contributor Kumar Daryanani is back from Austin GDC and has a few articles in store for us. We’ll start off with a brief interview he had with John Romero about Slipgate Ironworks upcoming, unnamed MMOG project.

Prowling near the entrance to the Austin Convention Center, I spotted a mane of black hair, and instantly recognised John Romero. With uncanny stealth I managed to ambush him for a quick on-the-spot interview.

The MMO Gamer: Mr. Romero, we’ve heard and seen that you’re working on an MMO. What can you tell us about your game?

John Romero: Yes I am, we’ve been working on it for about two years now.

The MMO Gamer: We’ve seen the press release, we’ve seen the website, which is devoid of details. Is there anything you can tell us about your game?

John Romero: It’s a PC MMORPG, that’s about it. We’re in stealth mode, we don’t talk about what we’re working on, the idea, or any of that stuff. We’re very quiet, probably for another year or so.

The MMO Gamer: Does that have anything to do with the bad reviews Daikatana got back in the day?

John Romero: No.

The MMO Gamer: Do you feel you have anything new to add to the MMO genre?

John Romero: Yeah, the kind of game that we’re doing is unlike any other MMO that’s out there, which is the reason why we’re being quiet, so no one can copy the idea. We’re doing something new.

The MMO Gamer: An interesting claim, considering that after the success of WoW there are a lot of MMO developers trying to deviate from the fantasy level grind model.

John Romero: Yes, that’s what they’re doing, but I’m not talking about what we’re doing.

The MMO Gamer: Okay, thank you very much for your time.
